Aubrey Beardsley opens at Tate Britain

A major exhibition of the drawings of Aubrey Beardsley, whose provocative erotic and elegant illustrations shocked late-Victorian London before his death of tuberculosis at the age of twenty-five, opens today at Tate Britain. Paula Rego opens in Edinburgh

22 November 2019

Following its highly acclaimed debut at MK Gallery in June, the exhibition Paula Rego: Obedience and Defiance opens this evening at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh. Spanning Rego’s career from the 1960s through to 2012, this ambitious retrospective of the Portuguese artist’s work has been curated by independent curator Catherine Lampert and organised by MK Gallery. Michael Rakowitz and Jason Hammel cook up a treat

Tomorrow afternoon at 2:15pm, at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, artist and author of A House with a Date Palm Will Never Starve Michael Rakowitz and chef-patron of Marisol Chicago restaurant Jason Hammel will be cooking up a delicious date-syrup recipe. Victor Willing show opens

18 October 2019

This evening, the exhibition Victor Willing: Visions opens at Hastings Contemporary, the first retrospective on this brilliant, ground-breaking, but overlooked painter in more than three decades. Willing, the late husband of fellow artist Paula Rego, was described by Sir Nicholas Serota as someone who burned the brightest in a bright generation. Following our recent monograph on Rego, we are delighted to have produced the publication that accompanies the Hastings exhibition, with a foreword by Serota. 

Gauguin Portraits opens

7 October 2019

Gauguin Portraits opens today at the National Gallery in London. The long-awaited exhibition is the first devoted to the portraits of Paul Gauguin. To coincide with the show, we have published Paul Gauguin's Intimate Journals, a beautiful facsimile of the first English translation of the artist's memoir, written just before he died, in which he reveals his innermost thoughts on art, life and love.

Michael Rakowitz show moves to Italy

7 October 2019

Michael Rakowitz's acclaimed exhibition that opened at London's Whitechapel Gallery in June has moved to the Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art in Turin. In Spring 2020, it will travel to the Jameel Foundation, Dubai. We published A House With A Date Palm Will Never Starve to coincide with the London show.

Craig-Martin at Frieze Masters

Sir Michael Craig-Martin today gave the keynote talk at Frieze Masters art fair in London. He was in conversation with Emilie Gordenker, director of The Mauritshuis in The Hague. The talk was followed by a signing of the new paperback of the artist's acclaimed book On Being An Artist.

Donum talk at Frieze London

Today, as part of the Frieze London VIP programme, Allan Warburg, owner of the Donum Estate in California, was in conversation with Clare Lilley, Director of Programme at Yorkshire Sculpture Park and curator of Frieze Sculpture Park, arts journalist Louisa Buck and artist Ingar Dragset, about the art works at Donum and the book that we have produced for the vineyard, with contributions from Lilley, travel writer Pico Iyer, and wine expert James Laube.

A new book for Donum Estate

Last night, we were at the ICA for the launch of our new book for the Donum Estate in California. The award-winning vineyard is home to sculptures by artists such as Ai Weiwei, Tracey Emin, Anselm Kiefer, and Doug Aitken. We are proud to have produced the book, which was designed by Micha Weidmann Studio.

Michael Rakowitz wins Nasher Prize

4 September 2019

The Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas announced today that Michael Rakowitz is the recipient of the 2020 Nasher Prize. The award recognizes artists who have ‘elevated the understanding of sculpture and its possibilities’. The prize consists of an award designed by Renzo Piano and $100,000. We are delighted to have published the artist's new cookbook A House With a Date Palm Will Never Starve.

Michael Rakowitz survey opens at Whitechapel Gallery

Tonight, the Whitechapel Gallery in London opens a major retrospective exhibition of the work of renowned Iraqi-American artist Michael Rakowitz, his first European survey show. The exhibition runs until 25 August before moving to the Castello di Rivoli in Turin. We are thrilled to be publishing A House With A Date Palm Will Never Starve, an extraordinary cookbook made by the artist and dozens of chefs and food writers to coincide with the show.

Paula Rego's defiant artworks to go on show at MK Gallery

Celebrated Portuguese-born artist Paula Rego's politically charged works will go on display in Paula Rego: Obedience and Defiance at MK Gallery later this month. The show opens in Milton Keynes on 14 June before moving on to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in November and the Irish Museum of Modern Art in May 2020. We are honoured to have produced and co-published the accompanying publication.

Michael Craig-Martin shows new work at Gagosian

31 May 2019

Sir Michael Craig-Martin today opens an exhibition of his new powder-coated steel sculptures at Gagosian in London, the first time his sculptural works have been shown indoors, and the first time they have been exhibited as a group in London. We will be publishing a new paperback edition of Craig-Martin's acclaimed book On Being An Artist in the autumn.

Tate Britain announces major Aubrey Beardsley show

13 May 2019

Tate Britain has announced that it will organize a major exhibition of the work of Aubrey Beardsley next year. Opening on 4 March 2020, it will be the largest show of Beardsley's infamous black-and-white drawings, which scandalized late-Victorian society, in fifty years. Last year, we published an exquisite centenary facsimile edition of a 1918 volume on Beardsley's life and work.

Michael Rakowitz named in Arts Power 50 list

2 April 2019

Iraqi-American artist Michael Rakowitz was yesterday named by the New York-based online newspaper Observer in its annual Arts Power 50, a list of the changemakers shaping the art world in 2019. In July, we will be publishing a very special book created with the artist, A House With  A Date Palm Will Never Starve, a cookbook featuring almost one hundred recipes using date syrup by celebrated chefs and food writers. 

LSE unveils new sculpture by Mark Wallinger

26 March 2019

London School of Economics has today unveiled a new sculpture on campus by Mark Wallinger. Located outside LSE’s Saw Swee Hock Student Centre, The World Turned Upside Down is a large political globe, four metres in diameter, with nation states and borders outlined but inverted. The project has been curated by Contemporary Art Society Consultancy.

Gauguin's Intimate Journals released

25 March 2019

We are pleased to announce the publication of Paul Gauguin's Intimate Journals, the latest in our series of facsimile editions. Gauguin wrote this witty and revealing memoir in the final months of his life. It appeared in French in 1918 and was translated into English three years later. Our facsimile reproduces this first translation, a rare edition privately published in New York for a select group of subscribers.   

British Council partnership announced

14 March 2019

We are delighted to announce that we have been asked by the British Council to produce the forthcoming history of its collection of contemporary art. The Council has been collecting works of art, craft, and design since 1938 to promote abroad the achievements of the very best British artists and designers. We shall be publishing the book, which is written by academic Annebella Pollen and entitled Art Without Frontiers, in early 2020.

Mark Wallinger's Labyrinth featured in new exhibition

8 February 2019

Mark Wallinger's book Labyrinth, which we published in 2014 to celebrate the completion of his permanent installation across all 270 London Underground stations, and two of the works produced as part of the project feature in a new exhibition that opened at Large Glass in London last night. The show, which explores how the idea of the labyrinth has inspired artists through time, brings together works by seven contemporary artists. Click here for details of the book. 

Art / Books produces new publication for US museums

2 February 2019

Today the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York, in partnership with the Detroit Institute of Arts, opened Humble and Human, an exhibition of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works from the two museums' collections. The show runs until 26 May before opening in Detroit on 23 June. We are proud to have been invited to edit, design, and produce the exhibition catalogue.

Sir Michael Craig-Martin opens major US show

29 January 2019

Today, Sir Michael Craig-Martin opens his most comprehensive solo show in the United States to date. The Gallery at Windsor in Vero Beach, Florida, hosts thirty-five paintings and six sculptures by the artist. The exhibition, curated by Hannah Freedberg, director at Gagosian, is the result of a three-year curatorial partnership begun in 2018 with the Royal Academy of Arts in London.

Edward Woodman: The Artist's Eye published

23 November 2018

We are proud to announce the publication of Edward Woodman: The Artist's Eye, the first monograph on the photographer of choice for two generations of artists, including Richard Deacon, Cornelia Parker, Phyllida Barlow, Antony Gormley and Damien Hirst. The book coincides with the show 'Space, Light and Time: Edward Woodman, A Retrospective' at the John Hansard Gallery in Southampton, which opens this evening.

Elfin Rhymes released

29 October 2018

The latest of our facsmile editions of classic children's books is now available. A Book of Elfin Rhymes, written by an author known only as 'Norman', was first published in 1900 and captures the mysterious and ridiculous world of goblins, witches and fairies. Each verse is accompanied by drawings by Carton Moore Park in one, two or three colours in a style that not only conveys the magic of the fairy-realm, but also is strikingly modern in character.

National Gallery announces major new Paul Gauguin show

25 October 2018

The first show of Gauguin's portraits opens at the National Gallery in London next October. Fifty paintings, sculptures and sketches will be gathered for the exhibition, the Evening Standard writes. In March we will publish a beautiful facsimile of the artist's intimate journals, written in the final months of his life.

Little Women published

Tim Braden book published

We are delighted to announce our latest title, Tim Braden: Looking and Painting. This beautiful book, the first on the British painter in ten years, draws together the various themes and styles of his work, and includes texts by Frieze editor Jennifer Higgie, curator Dominic Molon, and director of the Baltimore Museum of Art Christopher Bedford. Sir Michael Craig-Martin on BBC Radio 3

Today, at midday, Sir Michael Craig-Martin will appear on BBC Radio 3's Private Passions programme. He talks to presenter Michael Berkeley about the parallels between his art and the music he loves, including Satie, Bach, and the Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt, and he reveals his passion for opera. A Turkish edition of Zeid biography is published

We are delighted to announce that a Turkish edition of our recent title Fahrelnissa Zeid: Painter of Inner Worlds by Adila Laïdi-Hanieh has been released. Published by Res, an imprint of Istanbul gallery Dirimart, the book will be launched to coincide with an exhibition of Zeid's work. On 20 September, the author will be in conversation with Sotheby’s consultant Elif Bayoğlu Erdem at the Robinson Crusoe 389 bookshop in Istanbul.

London Art Book Fair opens at Whitechapel Gallery

The London Art Book Fair returns to the Whitechapel Gallery after a gap of three years, with more than eighty creative and cutting-edge publishers from all over the world. Adila Laïdi-Hanieh to head Palestinian Museum

We are delighted to report that Adila Laïdi-Hanieh, author of our recent book Fahrelnissa Zeid: Painter of Inner Worlds, has been appointed director of the Palestinian Museum in Birzeit. According to the Art Newspaper, Dr Laïdi-Hanieh will take up her new role later this month.

Paul Winstanley talk at the National Gallery

On Monday 30 July, at 1pm, artist Paul Winstanley will be speaking at the National Gallery in London about how several masters of the past, among them Pieter Saenredam and Francesco da Rimini, inform his practice as a painter today. The free lunchtime talk will be followed by a signing of his new book 59 Paintings: In which the artist considers the process of thinking about and making work, which we have recently published. Liverpool Biennial 2018 opens

14 July 2018

The tenth edition of the Liverpool Biennial opens to the public today. Taking place over fifteen weeks across the city in public spaces, galleries, museums and online, 'Beautiful world, where are you?' invites artists and audiences to reflect on a world of social, political and economic turmoil. In its review, the Telegraph says that the exhibition has 'such energy and dynamism, and demands it be seen'. We are pleased to be publishing the accompanying publication, the second time we have partnered with Liverpool Biennial.

Cult Norwegian artist Pushwagner dies

25 April 2018

We were sad to learn that Norwegian pop artist Hariton Pushwagner died yesterday at the age of seventy-seven. Hailed as one of Norway’s most important contemporary artists, he was celebrated for his epic and prescient satires on modern life, including the visionary graphic novel Soft City. We were proud to publish the definitive monograph on his work as our very first title in 2012.

To mark the publication of his book 59 Paintings, Winstanley presented a selection of his paintings and discussed the thinking behind them. New series of facsimiles

We are thrilled to announce the first titles in two new series of collectable facsimile editions, Art / Books Vintage Classics and Art / Books Children's Classics. The first Vintage Classic is a centenary edition of The Art of Aubrey Beardsley, published in 1918, while ABC: An Alphabet by Georgina Gaskin is a charming Victorian children's primer from 1895. Both are faithful reproductions of the original editions, beautifully bound in silkscreened cloth. Future titles include The Art of Rodin (1918), Little Women (1910), Elfin Rhymes (1900) and Paul Gauguin's Intimate Journals (1921).

Gillian Ayres dies

It is with great sadness that we heard that Gillian Ayres CBE RA died yesterday at the age of eighty-eight. We had the great pleasure and privilege to work with her last year to produce the definitive monograph on her work. Alan Cristea, who represented Ayres for the last twenty years of her life and with whom we published the book, described her as 'immensely courageous, independent and determined in both her art and her lifestyle'.

Gideon Rubin at Freud Museum

Gideon Rubin presents a specially created project for London's Freud Museum. 'BLACK BOOK', which runs until 15 April, features paintings inspired by imagery from pre-war German magazines. Its centrepiece is a 1939 first edition in English of Mein Kampf, which the artist has entirely blacked out. Click here for details of our monograph. 

Fahrelnissa Zeid show opens in Berlin

The Fahrelnissa Zeid retrospective opened at the Deutsche Bank KunstHalle in Berlin last night. The exhibition, organized with Tate Modern, will run until the spring. On 16 November, Dr Laïdi-Hanieh will take part in a panel discussion about the artist at the KunstHalle.

Tonight an exhibition of new work by Sir Michael Craig-Martin opens at the Alan Cristea Gallery in London. The catalogue for the show, which is entitled 'Quotidian' and includes screen, digital, and relief prints, laser etched panels, and tape drawings, contains selected extracts from our acclaimed book On Being An Artist.

Gillian Ayres debuts in Beijing

Gillian Ayres makes her debut in China with 'Sailing off the Edge' at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), which opens tomorrow. The exhibition consists of large-scale paintings from 1979 onwards, many of which have never been on public display. It has been curated by Phillip Dodd and Wang Chunchen, Head of the Department of Curatorial Research at CAFA. Click here for details of our monograph, published in April.

Daniel Buren book published

We are pleased to announce our latest title, Daniel Buren Underground, which documents the pioneering French artist's stunning art work in Tottenham Court Road, his first permanent public commission in the UK. Published in association with Art on the Underground to mark the work's completion, the book features a text by Hans Ulrich Obrist and an interview between the artist and Tim Marlow, Artistic Director of the Royal Academy. Fahrelnissa Zeid exhibition opens at Tate Modern

The retrospective 'Fahrelnissa Zeid' opens today at Tate Modern. The exhibition covers the Turkish-Jordanian artist's entire career, from her early work in 1940s Istanbul, through the monumental abstracts produced in Paris and London in the 1950s, to the later expressionistic portraits. We are proud to publishing the definitive biography by the academic and her former student Adila Laïdi-Hanieh, to coincide with the show.

Fourth Plinth winners chosen

21 March 2017

Artworks by British artist Heather Phillipson and US artist Michael Rakowitz have been chosen to go on display on the Fourth Plinth. Rakowitz's recreation of the giant winged bull from the ancient city of Nineveh, destroyed in 2015 by ISIS, which he remade from date syrup cans, will go on show in 2018, followed two years later by Phillipson's splodge of cream topped with a cherry, fly and drone. Our book on the Fourth Plinth commissions has recently been published.

New work by Gillian Ayres goes on show

This evening, the Alan Cristea Gallery in London presents an exhibition of new paintings and prints by Gillian Ayres, one of Britain’s most respected and best-loved postwar artists and a pioneer of abstract painting. The show, which runs until 22 April, opens in advance of a major retrospective of Ayres' work at the National Museum Cardiff. To coincide with both exhibitions, next month we are publishing the definitive monograph on the artist. Click here for more details. 

Two of our books shortlisted for prestigious prize

We are thrilled to announce that Michael Craig-Martin's On Being An Artist and Public Art (Now), edited by Claire Doherty, have been shortlisted for the Art Book Prize 2016. Administered by the Authors' Club, this prestigious prize was first awarded in 1954 and is given annually to 'the book on architecture or the arts most deserving’. Our two books have been nominated alongside six other titles by Penguin, Tate, Prestel, Princeton University Press and Yale University Press.

Tiqui Atencio on Spanish TV

Tiqui Atencio was today interviewed on Spanish television channel Canal 24 Horas's flagship cultural programme La Hora Cultural about her new book on collecting art Could Have, Would Have, Should Have. New Fourth Plinth shortlist announced

19 January 2017

The shortlist for the next Fourth Plinth commissions has been announced. A dollop of cream topped with a large fly and a drone by Heather Phillipson and an empty robe by Raqs Media Collective are among the proposed works to appear between 2018 and 2020. Tiqui Atencio's promotional tour continues to Miami this week, with two book signings during Art Basel Miami Beach. The first will be held this morning from 9.30am at the Rubell Family Collection, and second will take place tomorrow at midday at the art fair. Sotheby's New York this evening hosted a reception to celebrate Could Have, Would Have, Should Have. As well as being able to buy signed copies of the book, guests also had a private view of the auction house's Impressionist & Modern and contemporary sales, including works from the collection of Steven and Ann Ames, a close friend of the author. David Shrigley's giant thumb unveiled on Fourth Plinth

David Shrigley's colossal bronze sculpture of a thumbs-up was today unveiled as the latest commission on the empty plinth in Trafalgar Square. The 11th Fourth Plinth artwork was revealed by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, who said that it represents 'optimism, positivity, the best of us'. Lament wins award

We are delighted to announce that Livonia Print, printer of Lament by Bettina von Zwehl and Josh Cohen, designed in house by Art / Books, has won the 2016 Antalis Grand Print Master Award for the production of the book. The special prize is awarded by the Latvian Art Directors Club at its annual Adwards ceremony in Riga, which celebrate creative excellence in Latvia and is judged by international experts in print and design. Bettina von Zwehl show to open at Freud Museum

Bettina von Zwehl's exhibition 'Invitation to Frequent the Shadows' opens at the Freud Museum on 3 June. The show includes two series of photographs and a light installation in response to the archive of Anna Freud. It is also a homage to the artist’s closest friend, Natalie Ciletti, a child psychoanalyst who died tragically in 2009. Lament is published to coincide with the show.

Major Jonathan Yeo show opens in Denmark

Today a major exhibition of Jonathan Yeo's portraits opens the National Museum of History at Frederiksborg Castle in Denmark. The show includes several new paintings, including the first commissioned portrait of the former Danish prime minister, Helle Thorning-Schmidt, and a series of portraits of model and actress Cara Delevingne. Yeo portrait of Spacey unveiled in Washington DC

Tomorrow, at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC, Jonathan Yeo will unveil his new portrait of Kevin Spacey. It will be his second painting of the actor, after his picture of Spacey as Richard III, featured in The Many Faces of Jonathan Yeo. The work will be on long-term to the museum.

Body found in search for Jamie Taggart

We are very sad to learn that the body of missing Scottish botanist Jamie Taggart has been found in the mountains of Vietnam. Taggart, co-creator with his father of Linn Botanic Gardens in western Scotland and subject of our new book Another Green World, went missing on a plant-finding trip in October 2013, as we were working on the book. Our thoughts are with his father Dr Jim Taggart and his family. More on the story can found here.

Labyrinth at Frieze Art Fair

To celebrate Mark Wallinger joining Hauser & Wirth, the gallery has invited him to curate its booth at this year's Frieze Art Fair in Regent's Park, which opens for previews tomorrow. ‘A Study in Red and Green’ takes inspiration from Sigmund Freud’s study in nearby Hampstead, and has at its heart one of Wallinger's own labyrinths designed for London Underground. He will be signing copies of our new book Labyrinth at the Hauser & Wirth booth (D6) from 2pm on Thursday 16 October.

Jonathan Yeo profiled on CNN

As the first episode in its new 'Ones to Watch' series, CNN has produced a half-hour film on Jonathan Yeo. The US broadcaster has commissioned the artist to paint a new portrait of Tamara Rojo, artistic director of the English National Ballet. CNN had exclusive access to Yeo’s studio as he painted the iconic Spanish ballet dancer. The show is broadcast at 1030 BST and 1630 BST today and repeated Saturday 11, Monday 13, Tuesday 14 and Wednesday 15 October. Click here to see the film and details of our book on the artist.

Jonathan Yeo is one of the judges of this year's BP Portrait Award, which opened yesterday at the National Portrait Gallery. Jonathan Yeo painting raises over $100k for the Malala Fund

Jonathan Yeo's portrait of teenage Pakistani education campaigner Malala Yousafzai was yesterday sold at auction in New York for $102,500. The proceeds of the sale at Christie's will benefit the Malala Fund and will support women's and girls' education in Nigeria. Christie's announced today that it will auction Jonathan Yeo's celebrated portrait of teenage Pakistani campaigner Malala Yousafzai, who was shot by the Taliban, in New York on 14 May. All the proceeds from the sale of the painting, donated by Yeo and reproduced in our book on the artist, will benefit the Malala Fund. Ahead of the publication of Under the Influence, Suggs was channelling the spirit of John Deakin in the French House today as he pulled the first pint of the pub’s annual Pints Day. The lead singer of Madness, seen here photographed by Peter Clark – Deakin de nos jours – then auctioned the drink to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. A signed copy of Under the Influence will be sold in a charity auction at the pub next week.

Tretchikoff's iconic Miss Wong sold at auction

Vladimir Tretchikoff's celebrated painting Miss Wong has tonight been sold for R3.5 million (£215,000) in Cape Town, six months after the London sale of the 'Green Lady' for £1 million. While researching his new book on the artist, Boris Gorelik uncovered the previously unknown identity of the model for a portrait that adorned millions of homes from the 1950s. One of the most recognizable paintings in the world was sold for nearly £1 million at Bonhams in London today, double its estimate. Vladimir Tretchikoff's Chinese Girl, known as the 'Green Lady', was bought by British jeweller Laurence Graff. The video for David Bowie's long-awaited single 'The Stars (Are Out Tonight)', starring Bowie and Tilda Swinton, features Tretchikoff's 'Green Lady'.
